TORONTO – Today at the public day of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells 2004 Conference in downtown Toronto a new Government of Canada website - Our Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Future – was unveiled. The site is located at www.hydrogeneconomy.gc.ca/learnmore. Mr. Walt Lastewka, M.P., St. Catharines unveiled the new site to a group of students, public, industry and government representatives. They were on hand to learn about the innovative technology and to see demonstrations of Canadian hydrogen and fuel cell products at Nathan Phillips Square.

"Tools such as this new website are critically important for sharing information with Canadians on our country’s strength in this field," said Dr. Ron Britton, President and CEO of Fuel Cells Canada. Dr. Britton applauded the Government of Canada for creating this valuable tool and invited the public to visit the site to learn about exciting opportunities in this industry across Canada.

This website and supporting CD-ROM were designed to provide accurate, up-to-date information for anyone interested in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, from elementary students through to adults. The new educational resources clearly explains how the technology works, and highlights the benefit of a hydrogen economy for Canadians and the world.

"Creating awareness of the economic and environmental opportunities of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, and engaging the next generation of highly skilled workers are important factors for the continued growth of this innovative sector," said Industry Minister David L. Emerson. "Industry Canada is pleased to contribute to such initiatives that will strengthen Canada's leadership in the transition to a hydrogen economy."

The informative new site is presented in an interactive format with videos, diagrams, teacher resources and quizzes.

"Canada already has a world-class hydrogen and fuel-cell industry," said the Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources Canada. "The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that our industry continues to lead the way and a key to staying ahead is showing Canadians the practical benefits of using hydrogen and fuel cells. This Web site and CD-Rom will help to do just that."

The lead government departments and organizations on this initiative were Industry Canada, Natural Resources Canada, the National Research Council Canada, and Fuel Cells Canada. Project partners gratefully acknowledge the support of industry and academic partners for providing information and visual content towards the creation of this website. Special thanks to the following: Ballard Power Systems, BC Hydro, Cellex Power Products, Hydrogenics Corporation, PEM Technologies, Stuart Energy Systems.

Announcements demonstrating the growth of the industry will be taking place throughout the Hydrogen & Fuel Cells 2004 Conference & Tradeshow. The show running from September 25-28 in Toronto, has brought together over 700 delegates from over 30 countries to discuss innovative technology and showcase Canada’s new hydrogen and fuel cell products. All are invited to visit the outdoor demonstrations and exhibits at Nathan Phillips Square, which continue until Monday afternoon, September 27.
