GenCell Corporation today announced that two fuel cell related patents have been granted to the company by the United States Patent Office.  U.S. patent titled "Fuel Cell Bipolar Separator Plate and Current Collector Assembly and Method of Manufacture" issued 08/17/04 and received patent number 6,777,126.  U.S. patent titled “Method and Apparatus for In-Situ Leveling of Progressively Formed Sheet Metal” issued 8/10/2004 and received U.S. patent number 6,772,617.  The technology provides for efficient continuous, roll-to-roll manufacturing methods throughout the production of fuel cells.

Randolph Bernard, GenCell's president, stated, "We are very pleased to add these patents to our intellectual property portfolio.  Both patents relate directly to GenCell’s fuel cell design and manufacturing technologies and strengthen our position in the industry. The patents claim numerous innovative technical features and processes that are being successfully utilized in GenCell’s 40 kW molten carbonate fuel cell systems and the cell components that we provide to other fuel cell developers.”

GenCell has developed unique sheet metal-based bipolar separator plates that have been successfully adapted to all of the leading varieties of fuel cells and to the full range of fuel cell size.  The bipolar plates provide the distribution of feed gases and the mechanical support for the fuel cell.  The inventions allow the ability to produce the bipolar plates in discrete segments that can be repeated to form an infinite range of cell size. The repeated segment minimizes cost by virtue of low material content and the use of extremely high-volume continuous manufacturing methods and also features a unique center chamber that can be used for the critical requirement of heating and/or cooling the fuel cell. For example, the center chamber can be used in PEFC's with liquid coolant and in MCFC's and SOFC's with reforming catalyst for Indirect Internal Reforming of the hydrocarbon fuel to hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

GenCell Corporation designs and manufactures advanced, next-generation, fuel cell components and systems. The company utilizes its innovative designs to reduce the cost of key fuel cell components such as electrodes, bipolar separator plates, and fuel cell stack hardware while improving performance and life.
