Tokyo, (Jiji Press)--Yamaha Motor Co. said Wednesday it plans to launch a scooter powered by a direct methanol fuel cell for the first time in Japan in 2005.

As a first step toward the planned launch, the company has started test runs of the just-developed FC06 Proto DMFC-based motorcycle on public roads in Iwata, in the central Japan prefecture of Shizuoka.

Using its DMFC system for efficiently generating electric power with methanol, Yamaha hopes that the environmentally friendly motorcycle will have 40 pct fewer carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline engine-powered models.

The new model will have a cruising distance of more than 100 kilometers, triple the existing Yamaha electric scooter model's.

The company plans to supply the new motorcycle for leasing, but charges have yet to be fixed.
