The major Japanese trading company has obtained exclusive rights to develop and patent proprietary fullerene-related technologies in the US and Europe from Fullerene International Corp., a U.S. firm that manages patents related to the nanomaterial. These subsidiaries are expected to develop new applications of fullerenes by working with local businesses and researchers.
Mitsubishi Corp. has already obtained similar rights for the Asian region .
The company has been exploring the use of fullerenes in pharmaceuticals through its R&D subsidiary Vitamin C60 Bio Research Corp. It is also working to find applications of the nanomaterial in fuel cells through another R&D subsidiary, Proton C60 Power Corp. Both units are located in Tokyo.
