Boeing to use British fuel cell in aircraft The world's first crewed aircraft powered by fuel cells could be ready for test flights by December 2003. The experimental one-person
craft, being built by US aerospace company Boeing, will rely entirely on
a 25-kilowatt fuel cell for propulsion once airborne. The fuel cells will
provide electrical power for propeller motors. However, the aircraft will
need to use batteries to accelerate to the required speed during take off.
Snow Leopard Resources Inc. of Calgary Announced That Efforts to Reach a Definitive Agreement with Eltron Research, Have Been Terminated Snow Leopard Resources Inc. (Snow Leopard) announced today that efforts to reach a definitive agreement with Eltron Research, Inc. of Boulder, Colorado (Eltron), with respect to licensing certain sulphur mitigation technology developed by Eltron, have been terminated. Snow Leopard had previously signed a Letter of Intent with Eltron with respect to the acquisition of worldwide licensing rights for the technology, which encompassed catalytic membrane reactor and hydrogen sulphide solid oxide fuel cell development. Snow Leopard has been unable to meet the Letter of Intent's requirements with respect to the purchase of intellectual property rights. Giner Offers Pre-Production DMFC Power Supply Giner Electrochemical Systems LLC (GES, Newton, MA), a strategic alliance partner of General Motors Corp., announced that it is accepting orders for pre-production units of its 150W Portable Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) power supply. The portable unit has dimensions of 35cm x 15cm x 19cm (14in x 6in x 7.5in), resulting in a volume of 10l (0.35ft³), and it weighs 6.8kg (15lbs). With further development of the stack and system, GES projects a 50% reduction in weight, to 3.4kg (7.5lbs). The system is entirely self-contained, with on-board methanol storage for 280W/h of operation. The unit starts with the flip of a switch and begins power production in less than 1min. Dr. Stephen S. The Clean Energy Council is charged with the mission to serve as an advisor to the Board of Public Utilities regarding the design, budgets, objectives, goals, administration and evaluation of New Jersey's Clean Energy Program. Cooperation between MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Group and Ballard Power The MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Group and Ballard Power Systems of Kirchheim/Teck-Nabern in Germany have signed an agreement on the delivery of a fuel-cell system for use in a city bus. The vehicle is to be operated as part of the hydrogen project at Munich Airport from early 2004 onwards. driver's side of the truck, funnels reformulated methanol fuel through
a series of fuel cells to generate 5 kilowatts of electricity -- enough
to power the microwave, air conditioner, stereo, computer and lights inside
a stationary Freightliner cab and sleeper. It also could run Overstreet's
refrigerated trailer.
Toyota to lease six more fuel cell hybrid vehicles to government and companies NAGOYA, May 13, 2003 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it will soon lease six of its hydrogen-powered, fuel-cell hybrid vehicles to the Aichi prefectural government, the Nagoya municipal government and four private energy-related companies. Japan's biggest automaker said its recent agreements with the local governments, Iwatani International Corp., Nippon Oil Corp., Tokyo Gas Co. and Toho Gas Co., mark the first lease ever of fuel-cell vehicles in Japan to local governments or private companies. The cars will be delivered

Some automotive engineers and analysts worry that platinum is too expensive and too rare for fuel cells to be produced in the numbers needed for the technology to be a viable alternative to the internal combustion engine. "We have a perception problem,"
says Marcus Nurdin, managing director of the International Platinum Association,
based in Frankfurt, Germany.
The f-cell Forum is designed
to address the topic of fuel cells in Europe and worldwide, and the focus
of this year's event is an assessment of current fuel cell activities and
future markets.
A new class of materials
achieves that aim without the problems associated with other approaches,
researchers report in the May 16 issue of the journal Science. Their work
also points to ways of making the materials hold even more hydrogen.

and US to sign deal on tech for hydrogen fuel

In the next few days, the Government will sign an agreement with the US on 18 areas of cooperation dealing with cleaner and more efficient ways of using electricity and water. Enbridge asks court to kill Global Thermoelectric-Quantum Fuel Merger CALGARY (CP) - Enbridge Inc., which has seen the value of its preferred shares in Global Thermoelectric Inc. reduced to a tenth of their former value, is asking an Alberta court to abort Global's planned merger with a California alternative energy company partly owned by the world's biggest automaker. Global said Thursday it "intends
to fully reply to Enbridge's motion" in Court of Queen's Bench.

UPS to test fuel-cell vehicles Some Detroit-area residents will soon have their packages and letters delivered by prototype hydrogen-powered vehicles. Beginning in November, United Parcel Service Inc. will operate a small fleet of fuel cell-powered vehicles on daily runs to test the experimental power source's performance during heavy stop-and-go driving in a busy metropolitan area. DTI report on vision for fuel cell sector The Department
of Trade and Industry (DTI) has published a new report, entitled A Fuel
Cell Vision for the UK — The First Steps — Taking the White Paper Forward,
in which it outlines a draft framework for a common vision for the fuel
cell sector in the UK.
The DTI has stressed that the creation of the vision will require the full engagement of industry, Government and the research community, as well as the DTI-funded industry body, Fuel Cells UK, which was launched in May 2003. The Government plans to launch its fuel cell vision at the Grove Fuel Cell Symposium in September 2003. In the interim, by means of a series of workshops and meetings, Fuel Cells UK will develop the vision for the fuel cell sector through consultation with industry in June, July and August 2003. The report also invites relevant comments and input to Fuel Cells UK New Fuel-Cell Vehicles Tour Canada Ford's prototype Focus Fuel-Cell Vehicle will be demonstrated in Ottawa on May 20 at 580 Booth Street at 11:15 a.m. Media will have an opportunity to view, ride in and drive the vehicles.
