from 24 to 25 April.

Nanocubes Store Hydrogen Thanks to a Special Surface The shiny surfaces of BASF's nanocubes as seen under the electron microscope don't promise too much. These futuristic structures based on metalorganic compounds have a lot to offer. Their three-dimensional lattice structure has numerous pores and channels, making nanocubes an ideal storage medium for hydrogen. As little as two grams of the material has an internal surface that corresponds to the area of a soccer pitch. The term nanocubes is justified because although the outer edges of the cubes measure a few micrometers, the inner structure is in the nanometer range. Hydrogen is a possible source
of energy for miniature fuel cells that might power mobile electronic devices
such as laptops or cell phones in the future., Researchers at BASF are
using nanocubes to solve problems in storing the gas.

INTERVIEW: WestLB Bets Fuel Cells Japan's Next Megahit TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Instead of relying on more high-tech gadgets that consume energy, the next hit product for Japanese electronics makers may be gadgets that generate energy, a Tokyo-based consumer electronics analyst predicts. Asian rivals may be closing the gap on memory chips and computer displays, but Japanese companies remain pioneers in fuel cells, which could become cash cows from the end of the decade, says Kun Soo Lee, senior analyst at WestLB Securities Pacific. Fuel cells produce electricity, without generating pollutants, via an electrochemical reaction that uses oxygen and hydrogen. The market for micro fuel cell systems to power notebook computers and mobile phones, and stand-alone fuel cell generators that provide power and heat to the home should take off by 2010, Lee says. "In 40 to 50 years, I expect most people will be using stand-alone generators" that can be installed at homes and offices as needed, he said. Along the way, fuel cells may take on the same importance for Japanese makers that oil has for Saudi Arabia, Lee says. That may sound like an overstatement, but Japanese companies already hold key fuel cell patents and are expected to lead the world in this lucrative market, Lee said. Among the leading Japanese fuel cell developers are Sanyo Electric Co. (SANYY or 6764), Sony Corp. (SNE or 6758), Casio Computer Co. (J.CAS or 6952), NEC Corp. (NIPNY or 6701), Hitachi Ltd. (HIT or 6501) and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (MC or 6752), Lee said. The two kinds of fuel cell
systems will become widely available by around 2006, ahead of similar technology
being developed for automobiles, the analyst said.

H Power has been determined. H Power stockholders will receive 0.8305 shares
